Pop Culture Journal 6: The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead

Usually I am into comedy type shows and movies; however, The Walking Dead Come Knocking, has turned into a Sunday night show that I religiously have watched here at school.  This show is about a town that has been taken over by zombies; yet, not everyone has been affected by the "infection."  There are a group of people trying to survive through all the events that are happening, they need to try and find food, shelter and kill of any zombie that may soon be a threat to their life.  This article, written by Zack Handlen, gives you a great over view of how The Walking Dead series has overcome the bad seasons in the previous two year and how last Sunday Night's episode has truly left all its viewers on the edge of their seats.

Movie Genres: Comedy

After watching " Looking at Movies --  Genre: The Western" I came to understand and think about all the different aspects of an everyday movie.  One thing that really stuck out to me was the way certain stars are usually in the same themed movie.  For instance Adam Sandler, this man is known for his humor and way of making people laugh, weather it was The Longest Yard, Big Daddy, or Happy Gilmore he has brought humor to the big screen.  He has been in 31 movies and 94 TV episodes since his career started in 1989.  He is number two for the Best Comedy Actors, proceeded by Owen Wilson and fallowed by Steve Carell and Eddi Murphy.  All these men have truly brought laughter to every home.

Looking at Movies

Three new terms I learned today were realism, antirealism and verisimilitude.  Realism is the ability to see what is happening in the movie and being able to everyday lifestyles, living conditions and/or places in the world.  It is real.  An example of this is if the movie 2016, this movie shows true facts about what the world could be like in 2016 with President Obama in office for another four years.  The realism of this happening is defiantly true, or very probable since President Obama has been reelected.

The Hunger Games

Katniess saying goodbye to Rue

Upon watching The Hunger Games it was unclear to me the true message this move was trying to convey.  Regardless of the overall message there was one scene that not only struck me but also my fellow friends while watching this movie.  Katniss Everdeen, the main character, and Rue, another competitor, have become extremely close.  They join forces to survive and try to win the game.  Katniss and Rue devise a plan to blow up the main food supply which means separating from one another.  Upon achieving their goal, Rue is caught in a trap and Katniss saves her, but immediately after standing up Rue is hit with an arrow.

As you all can probably tell I enjoy comedy in numerous different ways.  Another one of my other addictions is Modern Family.  Now if you've never watched this show it airs on ABC Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. and I urge you all to watch.  Modern Family is pretty much just like the title.  A modern family consisting of one family that lives closely together and experiences everything together.  There is a normal aged family, a family with to gay parents, and a family consisting of an older man and a younger women.  Along with a hormonal pregnant women, an over protective mother, and an over sophisticated boy along with many others. They go through all of life's obstacles some families.  This episode revolves around a good old Yard Sale.

Finding Nemo

Nemo and Marlin

My favorite movie is Finding Nemo, yes an animated movie. I am in love with Disney movies and animations.  Finding Nemo shows you a view of what the ocean looks like, all the good and bad; sharks, coral reefs and majestic fish.  But the movie is so much more than that.  It shows you the love between a father and son.  It shows you valves that you should have along with any struggle a "teenager" will have in their life time.  The emotion you feel as you watch this movies is amazing, a wide variety consisting of love , hatred, fear, and astonishment.

Finding Nemo has been a reflection of my life story to some extend and that is part of the reason its is my favorite. All my struggles in life, my eye disability; Nemo's fin, fighting with your parents to being inseparable and finding yourself.

Beyond my personal reasons for loving this movie it is also a great teaching tool that I will use in my future classroom.  It teaches everyone that acceptance is needed and not to "judge a book by the cover."  When Dori and Marlin run into the shark, Bruce, they are overcome with fear when in reality the sharks live by the motto, Fish are friends not food.  This shows how everyone stereotypes people before they truly understand who they are.  This movie also teaches everyone to have trust with one another.  The reason that Nemo is taken away is because Marlin simply didn't believe in Nemo's lucky fin and it turns out in the end of the movie after the trust they gain together saves not only Dori's live but their  relationship as father and son.
